This will be our year.
The phrase brings me back to a vivid moment from January 2020, in the Before Time. It’s the first Tuesday of the new year. A hipster barber, a Sicilian redhead, and a Filipina writer are sitting in a bar. (In 2020, my favorite cocktail bar was still open on Tuesdays.) Everyone is at least three drinks in. The redhead and the writer are commiserating with the barber, who has had a spectacularly shit year.
“Everything will be different from now on,” the barber vows. “Just watch. 2020 will be my year.”
We all know what happened next. 2020 was many things, but I don’t think it was anyone’s year.
So maybe you've been waiting a while to be able to say it and really believe it. Or maybe the fresh optimism of January 1st, 2024 brings the words to your lips easily, with hope and a smile.
Sing along with us if you like, or say it out loud.
This will be our year.
Conor and I first thought of recording this cover of “This Will Be Our Year” by The Zombies in 2022, which felt like the first time post-Covid that we could claim a new year with confidence, rather than tiptoe towards it with caution.
The idea of singing together has been around even longer than that—in fact, almost as long as we’ve known each other. One of the first things we found in common was that we both sing and were in choirs! I briefly toyed with, but eventually junked, the idea of becoming an opera singer, while Conor went on to tour with a band.
It took us, two creatives with undiagnosed-but-highly-likely ADHD, a while to get it done, but here it is. A little tune with a New Year’s wish folded in, from us to you.
With so much gratitude to Conor, vocals/guitar/camera/lights/sound and all-around Renaissance Man, multi-hyphenate and co-schemer.
Happy 2024, everyone!
